Melbourne Victory officially announced a major decision recently: Spanish star Juan Mata will not be included in the squad list for the 2026-27 season, marking the formal end of his playing career. However, this is not the end of the story—the veteran who shone at Manchester United and Chelsea has not chosen to completely fade from football. He is currently at his home in Europe carefully weighing his next steps, and the blueprint for a new chapter has already emerged.
Mata will continue his connection with the A-League in a completely different role: no longer on the pitch, but leveraging his previously publicly known shareholder status in Melbourne Victory, while also personally leading the club's newly formed football committee as its first chairman.
In his farewell message, Mata wrote with emotion: "Every moment spent in this city is memorable, and the achievements we secured together last season are truly worth savoring. This land and these people have brought back my original passion for football." He publicly thanked his teammates, coaching staff, and the board for their acceptance and support, and said he will give his all to sow seeds for Australian football in his new managerial capacity and ignite the dreams of the younger generation.
Looking back at the "late bloom" of his career: Mata moved to Melbourne Victory ahead of the 2025-26 season, having previously not made many bright moments at Western Sydney Wanderers. But this fresh transfer miraculously sparked a second wind—he not only claimed the Johnny Warren Medal (the season's best voted by players), a symbol of the league's top individual honor, but also earned a place in the PFA Team of the Year. At the same time, he helped Victory reach the playoffs with a dazzling stat line of 13 assists and 5 goals, and his total domestic league minutes in a single season even surpassed his record from the 2017-18 season at Manchester United.
Speaking of his resurgence, Mata did not hide his gratitude to former head coach Arthur Diles, admitting that it was Diles who helped him "rediscover the pure joy of playing the game." In May of this year, he also received the club's player of the season honor.
