Returning Home After Nearly a Decade! Europa League Champion Defender Rejoins Boyhood Club on Free Transfer
On September 16, Groningen officially announced that 32-year-old Dutch defender Hans Hateboer has returned on a free transfer, with a contract running until the end of the season. Hateboer came through the club's youth academy, made his debut in 2014, and in the same year helped the team win the first major trophy in the club's history—the KNVB Cup. In 2017, he moved to Atalanta, where he made over 200 appearances across seven Serie A seasons and won the Europa League with the club in the 2023/24 campaign. After joining Rennes in 2024, he was loaned to Lyon and became a free agent this summer. He has been capped 13 times for the Netherlands. Nearly a decade later, he returns to where his professional career began.
