On September 17, 1986, the day of Paris Saint-Germain's European Cup debut, a bomb exploded in a litter bin on Rue Renne, killing seven people and injuring 55. The French government suspected George Ibrahim-Abdullah, leader of the Lebanese armed faction (FARL), of involvement, but his brother denied it in Tripoli. The attack was orchestrated by a Tunisian named Fouad Ali Sahli, recruited by Iran through Hezbollah, who was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1992. The match proceeded as scheduled that evening with 16,800 spectators; tear gas was deployed in the second half, heightening tensions. The players were unaware of the bombing before the match. The squad was plagued by internal strife: following their title win the previous season, poor transfer decisions undermined the team, the 4-2-4 formation proved ineffective, and they had just suffered a defeat to Matra. They ultimately drew 2-2 against Vitkovice, with Pilo converting a penalty. PSG finished seventh in the league that season and would be absent from the European Cup for the next eight years.
