Schalke 04

Won second place in the Bundesliga in the 2009-2010 season. Schalke 04 was founded on May 4, 1904. The club is located in Schalke, a suburb of Gelsenkirchen, so it was named Schalke 04. Schalke 04 is derived from the original Schalke Gymnastics Club founded in 1877. After Schalke Football Club was founded in 1904, the two clubs merged into one in 1919 and were named "Schalke Westfalia Sports Club 1904". In 1924, the club disbanded and Schalke 04 became an independent sports organization. In 1927, Schalke 04 won the football championship of the Ruhr region, but lost 1-3 to Munich 1860 in the final round of the National League; losing the league rights. The proud figure of the Schalke 04 team at the time was Ernst Kuzzola, who was the only national team member of the Schalke 04 team. After 7 years of hard work, Schalke 04 finally defeated Nuremberg 2-1 at the last second of the 1934 National League final and won the first national championship in history. In the following years, they won six more national championships in 1935, 1937, 1939, 1940, 1942 and 1958, and also won the FA Cup in 1937. Since the implementation of the first-division professional league in 1963, Schalke 04 has not only missed the league championship several times since it defeated Kaiserslautern 5-0 in 1972 to win the FA Cup, but was also relegated to the second division three times, losing its former glory. After the financial crisis in the 1994-1995 season, Schalke 04 finally finished third in the First Division in the 1995-1996 season and won the right to participate in the UEFA Cup. Faced with fighting on two fronts at home and abroad, the club's leadership decided to hit the UEFA Cup on the premise of relegation. Under the leadership of Dutch head coach Stevens, they passed the test and reached the finals with excellent defensive counterattacks. In the quarter-finals, they eliminated Valencia 2-0 and 1-1; in the semi-finals, they defeated Tenerife 2-0 in an away game 1-1 and at home in an extension period, and finally faced the Italian powerhouse Inter Milan with defensive counterattack tactics. With the home and away tie tied at 1-1, they finally defeated Inter Milan 4-1 on penalty kicks and won the UEFA Cup for the first time in the history of the team. This is undoubtedly the most glorious page of Schalke 04 since its establishment in 93 years. In 1998, Schalke 04 only reached the quarter-finals in the UEFA Cup defending match and lost to their old rival Inter Milan with a total score of 1-2.
