Sudden Training Incident: Three Swiss Core Players Leave Early, Colombia's Qualification Hopes Shift

Switzerland's preparations for a crucial match suffered an unexpected blow. During Monday's pre-match training in Vancouver, midfield stars John Manzanbi, Ruben Vargas, and Djibril Sow all left the session early, failing to complete the scheduled drills. Swiss officials only confirmed the situation but did not provide a reason. The team is set to face Colombia on Tuesday for a place in the Round of 16, and this development has added significant uncertainty to the contest.

Head coach Murat Yakin said after training: "If they can't play tomorrow, it will be extremely difficult for us. Everything depends on the medical results this afternoon. That's football - you always have to be ready to adapt until the last moment." Among the three, Manzanbi's potential absence is the biggest concern for the coaching staff. The 20-year-old midfielder has scored three goals in the tournament, showcasing a comprehensive attacking ability that has made him a nightmare for opposing defenses.

Captain Granit Xhaka praised him: "He is evolving into a top-class player. Young, hungry for success, and hugely important to the team." Vargas, who plays for Sevilla in La Liga, is also a core midfielder for Switzerland, contributing two goals and one assist in the tournament. Additionally, defenders Luca Jaque and Michel Aebischer did not participate in training, and their availability is also in doubt.

Yakin added: "Everyone wants to play, and we have enough options. Even if problems arise, it's not the end of the world. The two training sessions I had yesterday and the day before were very good, and I remain optimistic. But having an issue in the training session the day before the match is not ideal... John's situation might be tricky; I hope it's not the case. Everything is still unknown."

Manzanbi was not a starter at the beginning of the World Cup, but he came off the bench to score a brace in Switzerland's 4-1 win over Bosnia in the group stage, becoming the youngest player in World Cup history to score two goals as a substitute. He then earned a starting spot and helped the team secure a 2-1 victory against Canada in the final group match. In the Round of 32 against Algeria, he used his pace to get to the byline and set up Breel Embolo for the opener, as Switzerland won 2-0.

Teammate Dan Ndoye remarked: "What he is doing at his age is unbelievable. For us, he is an incredible player who helps us go further. He still has huge room for growth, and we are delighted to have him." Manzanbi plays for Freiburg in the Bundesliga, where he contributed five goals and four assists in 26 starts last season, helping the club reach the Europa League final, which they lost to Aston Villa.

If Switzerland win on Tuesday, they will reach the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 1954. Colombia, meanwhile, defeated Ghana 1-0 in the Round of 32. The South American side reached the quarter-finals at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil but failed to qualify for the 2022 tournament in Qatar.
