Tottenham Hotspur F.C. (AIM: TTNM), referred to as Tottenham (Spurs or The Spurs), is a British professional football club located in Tottenham, North London. It has a history of more than a century since its establishment in 1882 and currently competes in the English Premier League. The club's home stadium is White Hart Lane, and the club's Latin motto "Audere est Facere" means "Dare to do something." Tottenham Hotspur is traditionally one of the most entertaining and popular clubs in English football. It was also the first team to win a double league and FA Cup championship in the 20th century in the 1960/61 season. In 1963, Tottenham reached the European Cup Winners' Cup and became the first British team to win an important tournament on the European continent. In the 1970s, they won two League Cups and became the first UEFA Cup champions; they successfully defended the FA Cup in the 1980s, and won the UEFA Cup again in the 1983/84 season. Since the 1990s, one FA Cup and two League Cup gold medals have been added one after another. In recent years, Tottenham's performance in the league has steadily increased and they often participate in European competitions. Since Tottenham's traditional home jersey is white, Tottenham fans have always been called "Lilywhites". As early as the First World War, Tottenham had developed a rivalry with their neighbor Arsenal, and the rivalry between the two teams was the famous "North London Derby". In the early years, Tottenham Hotspur's predecessor, "Hotspur Football Club", was founded in 1882 by a group of cricket players from St. John's Presbyterian School and Tottenham Grammar School. The team was renamed Tottenham Hotspur to distinguish it from a local team called London Hotspur. The first competitive match was a 5–2 win against St. Albans in the London Association Cup in 1885. Tottenham joined the Southern League in 1896. In 1899 Tottenham moved into their new home ground at Tottenham, and the stadium was named after the owner's nearby pub - the "White Hart Lane" stadium. Won the Southern League Championship for the first time in 1900. They won the FA Cup in 1901 and were the only non-league team in history to win the FA Cup. They only joined the Football League in 1908. Tottenham won the Second Division championship in the 1919-20 season and then returned to the First Division. The following year (1921), they defeated Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-0 at Stamford Bridge and won the FA Cup again. 1920s to 1940s Following the FA Cup victory in 1921, Tottenham went through thirty years of nothing, while Arsenal became the super team in North London. In the 1921-22 season, Tottenham ranked second in the league behind Liverpool, and also advanced to the semi-finals of the FA Cup. Spurs gradually declined, finishing below 12th for the next five seasons, and were relegated to the Second Division in 1927-28, where they stayed until 1933. Later, Tottenham were promoted back to the First Division under the leadership of Percy Smith. The forward combination at that time: GS Hunt, W Evans and Taffy O\'Callaghan scored a total of 75 goals and finished third in the league. However, Tottenham were relegated again in 1934-35. Until Britain announced its participation in World War II on September 3, 1939, Tottenham ranked seventh in the Second Division.
