Team Introduction: The Liberia National Football Team, also known as the Lone Stars, is the men's national football team of the African country Liberia and is under the jurisdiction of the Liberian Football Association. Although Liberia's George Weah became the 1995 World Footballer, the first and still the only African footballer to win this honor, personal honors cannot push the national team onto the world stage. Liberia has never reached the finals of the World Cup. The best result was in the 2002 World Cup qualifiers in South Korea and Japan, only 1 point behind and failed to qualify. Development History Liberia has participated in every World Cup qualifier since 1982, but has failed to qualify. However, it has been working hard to improve its football standards. In 1987, the Liberian team won the runner-up in the West African Cup of Nations. In 2002, Liberia entered the African Cup of Nations finals for the first time. Although it failed to qualify from the group, it had achieved a historic breakthrough. Liberia's most famous player is George Weah. He once played for France's Paris Saint-Germain and Italy's Ac Milan. In 1995, he won three titles: European Footballer of the Year, African Footballer of the Year and World Footballer of the Year. Weah is the first non-European player to win the European Footballer of the Year award. The Liberian domestic league began in 1965 and the cup competition began in 1974. The Liberian national men's football team has participated in international and continental football competitions since 1963.
