Reunion with Title Ambitions - Kily González Leads Inter Miami on Championship Campaign
Inter Miami CF has officially welcomed new head coach Cristian "Kily" González. On Tuesday, González was formally unveiled at a press conference in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, expressing his immense delight at taking charge of this marquee franchise and coaching superstar Lionel Messi. Last month, the club announced his appointment to replace interim coach Guillermo Hoyos, with a contract running through June 2028. Notably, González had reached an agreement with the club as early as August 27, but his arrival was delayed due to the work permit approval process, and he has only now officially taken the reins of the team.
This appointment marks a long-awaited reunion between González and Messi after many years apart - the two previously represented Argentina together twice during the 2005 World Cup qualifying campaign. González said emotionally at the press conference: "In football, there are some feelings that cannot be described in words - they are in a league of their own. To be the head coach of this club, to come back together with Leo and sustain that extraordinary bond we share, I feel incredibly fortunate and grateful. My respect for him is well known, and that makes this moment even more meaningful. To work alongside him and the talented players on this team, frankly, I feel a deep sense of fulfillment as a coach. Of course, all of this is wonderful, but now we must get down to work. God willing, we can get off to a great start tomorrow and ultimately lift the championship trophy."
Early Tuesday morning, González flew in from Argentina to Miami and immediately led the team's first training session. On Wednesday evening, he will take his place on the sidelines for the first time at Chase Stadium, guiding the team in a Champions Cup clash against Mexican league champions Cruz Azul.
Currently, Inter Miami sits second in the Eastern Conference with 45 points from 25 matches, but the team's form is a cause for concern - they have managed just one victory in their last nine matches. Star striker Luis Suárez has expressed his desire to deliver a strong first win for the new coach in this match against Cruz Azul. Suárez stated: "A game like this, it's a final. There's no time to look back at the past; the only thing to focus on right now is tomorrow." He added, "We just went through a tough stretch of fixtures, but now we've arrived at the best possible scenario: a final, and a new coach full of positive energy, hunger to grow, and tremendous passion. That mentality is contagious, and we are fully prepared to support him and his coaching staff."
Inter Miami will host Cruz Azul at home, before returning to MLS regular-season action on Sunday evening against San Diego FC.
