Away 2-1 win over Real Sociedad! Bournemouth creates European history with first victory, Ross: We should have won 3-0

In the Europa League opener, Bournemouth traveled to San Sebastian, Spain, and secured a 2-1 away victory over Real Sociedad, clinching the club's first-ever win in continental competition. Head coach Marco Ross was visibly thrilled after the match, lavishing praise on the attacking football philosophy the team displayed.

During the night's fixture, Justin Kluivert and Ryan both found the back of the net in the opening period, giving the Premier League side a flying start in their European debut. As one of the tournament's title favorites, Bournemouth successfully withstood the hosts' intense second-half onslaught. Real Sociedad pulled one back through Sergio Gomez, while Bournemouth goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic produced a string of outstanding saves in the closing stages to preserve the lead, allowing the roughly 2,000 traveling fans to head home with joy.

"This is Bournemouth's football philosophy — we always control the tempo, stay on the front foot, keep pushing forward, and create scoring opportunities. We had chances to extend the lead to 3-0, but a match ultimately has to be played for the full 90 minutes," Ross told the media.

"The overall tempo of the game was very tight, and it was a tough contest. But in the end, the result is worth celebrating. The first-half performance was textbook — our commitment, tactical execution, the attacking output from high pressing, our off-the-ball movement discipline, and the two goals — every single aspect was beyond reproach."

In the final five minutes of the match, Petrovic delivered two heroic saves in San Sebastian, twice denying Ori Oscarsson's attacking threats, helping the Cherries seal this historic victory. However, Ross did not shy away from addressing the concerns exposed during the team's second win since he took charge.

"It's essentially a mentality issue — we lacked the necessary intensity in certain phases. If we miss those key elements in our attacking style of play, we become passive," Ross further pointed out.

"This is a real problem we must face and resolve. When players were fatigued, we could have done better with our rotations. But the most significant takeaway today is that we secured an exhilarating victory away from home in our first European match."
