Controversial Red Card Suspension Overturned, Balogun Starts for USA Against Belgium

USA head coach Mauricio Pochettino decided to start forward Folarin Balogun in Monday's World Cup round-of-16 match against Belgium in Seattle. Balogun had been shown a straight red card after a VAR review in the round-of-32 match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, which would normally trigger an automatic suspension, leading many to believe he would miss this crucial game. However, Pochettino included him in the starting XI and fielded the exact same lineup that defeated Bosnia.

Belgium coach Rudy Garcia made a surprising adjustment, leaving star players Jeremy Doku and Kevin De Bruyne out of the starting lineup. Both had played key roles in Belgium's first four matches, with Doku only missing one game due to returning home for the birth of his son.

FIFA announced on Sunday that, under Article 27 of the Disciplinary Code, Balogun's red-card suspension was suspended and converted into a one-year probation, allowing him to play in this match. This decision sparked widespread controversy. United States President Donald Trump confirmed on Monday that he had contacted FIFA President Gianni Infantino to inquire about the details of the penalty and whether it could be reconsidered.

The Belgian Football Association and UEFA were among the most vocal critics of the decision. In a statement on Sunday, the Belgian FA expressed shock that FIFA had allowed Balogun to play on Monday (kick-off local time 5:00 p.m.). Infantino defended the decision of the independent panel in a statement on Monday, emphasizing that the independence of FIFA's judicial bodies is crucial to the integrity of football.

Speaking on Sunday, Pochettino said he had not been involved in the matter because he was focused on preparations. "I wasn't involved," he said. "I've been working on every aspect to have the team ready for the match in the best possible condition." On Wednesday, Balogun opened the scoring for the USA against Bosnia in the 45th minute but was sent off in the 64th minute for a tackle deemed dangerous. On Friday, he argued that both players were competing for position and the decision was unfair.

Notably, similar precedents exist: last November, FIFA suspended part of a ban for Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo; Argentine defender Nicolas Otamendi and Ecuadorian midfielder Moises Caicedo also had red-card suspensions from World Cup qualifiers reduced. Brazilian legend Garrincha, after being sent off in the 1962 semi-final, was allowed to play in the final under political pressure. The USA is seeking to reach the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time since 2002.
