Cristian Romero Bids Farewell to Tottenham: 'I Wasn't Perfect, but I Gave My All'

Argentine center-back Cristian Romero has officially ended his stint at Tottenham Hotspur. According to reliable information, La Liga powerhouse Atletico Madrid has reached an agreement with Tottenham for the transfer, with a total package of up to 40 million euros ($46 million), including a fixed fee of 35 million euros and 5 million euros in add-ons.

On Friday local time, Romero posted a farewell message on his personal social media to the entire club. He admitted that he was not perfect, but emphasized that he gave his all every time he wore the Tottenham shirt.

He expressed gratitude to the club staff: "I am grateful to all those who walked with me at the club. The coaching staff, teammates, staff, and those who worked silently behind the scenes – you are all part of my personal journey and hold a special place in my heart."

He also warmly thanked the fans: "Thank you for the love and respect you gave me from the very beginning, making me feel I belonged here. Thank you for every song, every flag, every round of applause, and your constant support."

Romero wrote: "I know I was not perfect, but one thing gives me peace: I always gave without holding back. I defended this shirt with pride and all my heart."

In five seasons at Tottenham, Romero went from an initial loan to becoming the defensive core of the team, and he wore the captain's armband in 2025. He helped Tottenham win the Europa League in 2025 by beating Manchester United 1-0 in the final. At the international level, the 28-year-old defender made 7 appearances in this year's World Cup; he had previously helped Argentina win the 2022 World Cup and the 2021 and 2024 Copa America titles.

"Today, I say goodbye to a place that over the past five years has become much more than a club to me," Romero continued. "It is home, a place of struggle, and a significant part of my life and my family's. I leave with full memories and great pride, proud of everything we experienced and achieved together."

"When I first arrived, I had a clear dream: to leave my mark on the club's history. I knew the only way was to give everything, make sacrifices, to achieve that seemingly distant goal – to lift a trophy again. And we did it."

"This journey was not perfect, but I don't want it to be a footnote to our farewell. I choose to remember the happy moments, the lessons learned, the people who were with me, and most importantly – the love I felt during these five years."
