Alonso Reveals: Palmer and Rogers' On-Pitch Chemistry Rooted in Off-Pitch Friendship

Chelsea head coach Alonso has openly stated that the deep personal friendship between Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers, who joined this summer, is serving as a catalyst for the pair's rapid emergence of on-pitch chemistry.

The duo's chemistry was fully on display in Chelsea's 6-3 comeback victory over Leeds United in the League Cup midweek clash – Rogers jokingly looked puzzled at the time, questioning why Palmer had beaten him to the man of the match trophy.

Since arriving from Aston Villa for a club-record transfer fee of £117 million (approximately $158 million), Rogers has recorded two goals and four assists in just five appearances.

Meanwhile, Palmer has already scored four goals and provided one assist this season, playing a key and highly threatening role in the attacking combination led by front-line core João Pedro.

"In my view, both feel they deserve that award, and that's exactly the right signal," Alonso said at the pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday's Premier League home fixture against Hull City, referring to the light-hearted incident. "There's no question they both enjoy playing alongside each other and are having fun combining on the pitch."

"Both are genuinely happy to see the other contributing to the team, and that's exactly what we want to see. The fact that this rapport has emerged so early is really encouraging for us, and it confirms that strong partnerships are being built within the squad."

The 24-year-old Palmer and Rogers have known each other since their early days with the England youth teams and the Manchester City academy.

In the match against Leeds United, both came on as substitutes at halftime when Chelsea were trailing 0-2. Palmer scored twice, including a penalty, while Rogers provided three assists – though he insisted it was actually four – as they jointly orchestrated the remarkable comeback.

When asked how much their off-pitch relationship helps on the pitch, Alonso replied: "I think it's hugely influential, because a strong emotional bond already existed between them long before they became partners on the pitch."

"In the weeks leading up to the transfer being finalized, we had been observing this connection, and Cole played a significant role. He was instrumental, as was Morgan, and the club also deserves credit."

Hull City, newly promoted to the Premier League this season, currently sit third in the table, one point ahead of Chelsea, as they travel to Stamford Bridge boasting an unbeaten start of two wins and a draw without conceding a single goal.

The Tigers' manager Sergey Jakirovich half-jokingly suggested that the most direct way to stop Chelsea's flowing attack is to "kick their legs right off."

"We'll approach tomorrow's match with the same respect as we did against Arsenal last week," said Alonso, whose side recently lost 1-2 at the Emirates to the defending champions.

"Hull City are a tough team to beat. They have their own weapons, they're full of belief, and they're well-coached, so this will be a hard-fought game. We need to give everything to get the result."

Meanwhile, Chelsea winger Pedro Neto has signed a new six-year contract keeping him at the club until 2032.

The 26-year-old Portugal international has contributed 21 goals and 19 assists in 108 appearances since joining from Wolves in 2024.

"Whether as a team or individually, I've had many wonderful moments here, and now I want to create even more of these moments," he told the club's official channels. "I'm really excited because we believe we can achieve so much together."
