£400M Splurge Fails to Deliver First Win: Spurs Winless and Scoreless in Four as Coach Admits Fitness and Confidence Shortfalls

On Saturday (local time), Tottenham Hotspur drew 0-0 with Everton, marking their fourth Premier League game of the season without a win and without scoring a single goal. The club spent approximately £400 million (roughly $541 million) in the summer transfer window, but the massive investment has yet to translate into any league victories.

Spurs head coach admitted candidly in his post-match comments that the team suffers from clear weaknesses in two key areas: "physical reserves" and "self-confidence," though he remains firmly convinced they can climb out of this early-season slump.

Discussing the current predicament, the coach showed no signs of excessive anxiety, recalling the difficult circumstances when he took over the team in late March last season — the previous coach had been in charge for just 44 days before the team had slipped dangerously close to the relegation zone.

"When I arrived last season, things were already as bad as that level —" (he gestured above his eyes to indicate how low the standard was) "— do you understand? Let me stress this again: it was that hard. I've never been a blind optimist; I'm very pragmatic. I've already explained this — I'm disappointed with the results, but this isn't something that happens overnight, is it? It's not like you come in and immediately see improvement, nor that you can instantly mold a team."

On the reasons for the difficult start to this season, the coach pointed to transfer timing and injury issues. Marmoush and Savio only completed their signings just before the summer window closed, and with multiple players suffering injuries during pre-season, these factors collectively hindered the team's preparation for the campaign.

"This is the time of year in football when you're building a team, and we got off to a late start because Marmoush, Savio, Solanke, and Maddison only began training together two weeks ago," he explained to the media.

Spurs displayed considerable attacking intensity in the opening phase of the match but were unable to break the deadlock, gradually falling into a slump in the second half. After the final whistle, boos from the fans in attendance were relentless.

"I thought we played very well in the first 30 minutes. After that, we may have lacked the physical fitness to keep up because everyone's body wasn't at its best, and we're working on that. We created some good combinations, but our shot count was clearly too low. We need to increase the number of shots. We need to review and analyze our decision-making because we made too many wrong choices, but in my opinion, the overall performance wasn't bad."

On the injury situation, the coach elaborated: "After the Qatar World Cup, several players on the squad took part in that tournament, and that's just how it was. We had two or three players who got injured — Matheus Fernandes and Van de Ven were ruled out during the pre-season tour in Australia and couldn't train, plus Solanke and others with injury concerns as well."

"I'm neither an optimist nor a pessimist; I'm a realist. If you can play like that for 30 minutes, it shows you have the ability to play good football. We need to sustain that performance across all 90 minutes and be even more focused in the final 25 minutes. Had we won today, the conversation right now would be about an entirely different match."

The coach specifically noted that the team's performance today felt more like a cohesive unit working together. While there were no goals and no victory, compared to the clash against Nottingham Forest, he could see the team's unity.

"As for the players' attitude and conduct, there's nothing for me to criticize — absolutely nothing. I've always stressed the importance of staying calm and not losing confidence just because we aren't scoring or winning."

"Stay calm, keep improving, work hard in training — everyone needs to think for themselves about what areas they need to work on, right?"
