Arsenal 16-Year-Old Scores Twice in a Single Match, Equaling Rooney's Feat

On Tuesday local time, Arsenal teenager Max Dowman scored a brace in the League Cup clash against Ipswich Town, becoming the second player in Premier League history to score a brace for a club at the age of 16, joining Wayne Rooney in this elite category.

During the crucial matches of last season as Arsenal pushed for the Premier League title, Dowman contributed a goal and an assist in a 2-0 home win over Everton, making a lasting impression. However, this season he had been named on the bench four times without yet making an appearance, having only recently represented the U21 side last Saturday.

Just three days later, the teenage prodigy made his season debut and scored in the 7th minute with a brilliant individual breakthrough, then added a second shortly after the half-hour mark, helping the Gunners secure a 4-2 victory over their opponents.

Rooney also scored a brace at the age of 16 in the League Cup. That was in October 2002, when he was playing for Everton against Rotherham United.

Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta admitted that the young player's recent excellent performances have made it difficult for the outside world not to praise him highly.

"It's a pleasure to have him," Arteta said at the post-match press conference. "When he scores goals and creates magical moments like tonight, people will naturally talk about him — that's only natural."

"I think he can perform those technical moves effortlessly — that's his greatest talent. And on the defensive end, the commitment he shows and his ability to consistently maintain that standard is remarkable for a 16-year-old. He can create highlight moments and also sustain a consistent output throughout the entire match."

"Considering what we demand of our players, it's extremely difficult to achieve that, and he is continuously improving."

"He is an incredible player because he possesses that character trait and his love for the top stage."

Last season, Dowman also set the record for the youngest starting player in the Premier League when he came on as a starter against Crystal Palace.

Before Tuesday's match, Arteta had cautioned Dowman that any playing time this season would have to be earned on his own merit. The teenage prodigy responded emphatically in just 7 minutes at Portland Road Stadium.

His first goal came after a quick interception, followed by a clever one-two combination with Eberechi Eze, then dodging Cédric Kipré with a series of stepovers before slotting the ball into the bottom-left corner.

The second goal came just 98 seconds after the restart, as Dowman controlled a cutback from Martín Zubimendi, quickly adjusted his body, and fired a low left-foot shot into the far corner.

"Keeping the hype in check isn't easy, I understand, but what we must do is take care of him," Arteta added. "He's only 16. You don't see players like that in the Premier League."

"In other European leagues, it might be completely different, but in this league, considering the intensity of the game, the quality of the opposition, and everything you face, we really need to make sure that every time we put him on the pitch, he's in the right environment and is fully prepared."

"The odds might be extremely low, because you rarely see players who can handle the physicality... but he does, and every time he gets the opportunity, he does it very well."

"There are many areas where he needs to continue growing, but what he's doing at 16 is simply unbelievable."

Nonny Madueke and Mikel Merino also scored for Arsenal, while Ipswich's Anis Mehmedi and Chuba Akpom responded with two goals late in the match.

The victory saw Arsenal open the new season with six consecutive wins across all competitions, and the impressive squad depth on display should help Arteta's side make a strong push across multiple fronts.
