Pay Cut to Fulfill Dream! Jesus Officially Lands at Camp Nou on Three-Year Contract

In order to fulfill his long-held desire to move from Arsenal to Barcelona, Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus was willing to accept a significant pay cut. On Tuesday, he officially signed a player contract with the La Liga giants.

The two parties agreed on a three-year contract. Earlier, Arsenal and Barcelona had reached an agreement on the transfer fee, with a base fee of €10 million (worth £8.5 million or $11.5 million), plus performance-related add-ons up to €4 million (about $4.6 million).

“I did accept a salary significantly lower than my previous level, but joining Barcelona has always been my dream,” Jesus said at his unveiling. “Of course, this deal was not completed solely because of my personal concession; Barcelona also made considerable efforts.”

“If you had asked me a month ago, I certainly would have thought this was almost impossible. After all, I am 29 years old and previously dared not hope I would still have the chance to wear the Barcelona shirt.”

Negotiations for Jesus accelerated suddenly last weekend, because the La Liga defending champions failed to secure their primary transfer target — Atlético Madrid striker Julián Álvarez.

The Brazilian attacker revealed that he only learned of Barcelona's interest about a week ago. And a decade earlier, before joining Manchester City, he had already been given the opportunity to play for Barcelona.

“A week ago, I received word that this transfer could become a reality,” he added. “When I realized it was truly possible, I was incredibly excited. Now I can't wait to join training and matches.”

“Being a backup option to Álvarez does not bother me at all; it is no problem for me. What truly concerns me is being misunderstood as a 'bad guy' — that has never happened to me — or not getting playing time, which would trouble me.”

“I have the chance to play for Barcelona. That opportunity appeared ten years ago, and now fate has reached out to me again.”

Jesus moved from Manchester City to Arsenal in 2022. He impressed upon his arrival at the Gunners, but gradually fell down the pecking order in recent seasons. After suffering a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury in 2025, he never regained a starting spot in Mikel Arteta's lineup, with Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyökeres preferred by the manager. Nevertheless, Jesus insists he has fully recovered.

“The two years following the knee injury have been extremely tough,” Jesus admitted. “I was unable to play for almost a year, but that is now in the past. Physically, I am in great shape, my recovery has gone well, and I have already played again for Arsenal. I am 100 percent ready to take the pitch and give everything.”

Jesus' arrival fills the center-forward void left by Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres, who departed this summer. As the only out-and-out No. 9 under Hansi Flick, he will form Barcelona's new-season frontline alongside Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi, among others.
