75! English Legend Kevin Keegan, Two-Time Ballon d'Or Winner, Passes Away
English football has been struck by tragedy as Kevin Keegan, the superstar who won the Ballon d'Or twice, has passed away from illness at the age of 75. His family confirmed the news in a recent public statement.
Keegan enjoyed a glittering playing career, representing clubs such as Liverpool, Hamburger SV, Southampton, and Newcastle United. After retiring, he transitioned into management, taking the helm at Newcastle United, Fulham, the England national team, and Manchester City.
In a statement, the family said with deep sorrow: "It is with overwhelming sadness that we announce the passing of Kevin Keegan at the age of 75. The former England international and national team manager had been battling cancer, and his wife and daughters were by his side until the end. As a two-time Ballon d'Or winner, he was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather. We are deeply grateful for the dedicated care provided by Kevin's medical team. We kindly request that our privacy be respected during this extremely difficult time."
It is understood that Keegan's family first revealed his cancer diagnosis in January, and by June the disease had progressed to stage four.
During his playing career, Keegan helped Liverpool win the English top-flight title three times in the 1970s, as well as the European Cup, the FA Cup, and two UEFA Cups. After moving to Bundesliga side Hamburger SV, he won the Ballon d'Or in both 1978 and 1979. In 1982, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his outstanding contributions to football.
Keegan earned 63 caps for England, scoring 21 goals, and served as captain of the national team. He also managed the Three Lions from 1999 to 2000.
His managerial achievements at club level were also notable: he led Newcastle United from the Championship to the Premier League and masterminded a memorable title challenge in the 1995-96 season, ultimately finishing as runners-up by a narrow margin to Manchester United.
Newcastle United said in a statement: "We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Kevin Keegan. He is one of the most iconic, influential, and beloved figures in the history of our club. Today we mourn the loss of a true giant. We will carefully consider how to create a lasting tribute to Kevin's extraordinary life and legacy." The statement concluded: "Rest in peace, King Kevin."
