FIFA Investigates Post-Match Violence in World Cup Final, Multiple Players Involved in Clash

FIFA has officially launched a disciplinary investigation into a serious on-field conflict that occurred after the World Cup final. The incident involves multiple members of the Argentine national team who allegedly carried out physical attacks on Spanish players after the match.

The World Cup final, staged at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, saw Spain defeat their opponents 1-0 thanks to a 106th-minute winning goal from Ferran Torres, clinching their second World Cup title in history. However, a series of incidents in the closing stages and after the match cast a shadow over the top clash.

In the 90th minute, Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernández was shown a straight red card by referee Slavko Vinčić for a serious foul on Spanish player Pau Cubarsí. This was just the beginning of the chaos.

Post-match video footage clearly shows the conflict escalating after the final whistle. Argentine players Leandro Paredes and Nahuel Molina struck Spanish players Eric García and Rodri. Additionally, Argentine coaching staff member Roberto Ayala was captured on camera punching Spanish player Dani Olmo.

In an official statement released later, FIFA confirmed that it has formally initiated a disciplinary review procedure in accordance with Article 36 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. The statement noted that a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor has been appointed to investigate all potential code violations in the post-match incidents. Once the prosecutor completes the investigation report, the Disciplinary Committee will announce subsequent decisions and further details.

The red card in this incident also set a historical record: Enzo Fernández became the first player sent off in a World Cup final since the 2010 South Africa World Cup final. The previous player to receive this 'honor' was Johnny Heitinga, who played for the Netherlands against Spain in that match.
