Red Devils' Season Ticket Account Control Sparks Controversy, Four Major Fan Groups Jointly Question Club's Decision

Manchester United's recent restrictions on some season ticket holders' accounts have sparked joint opposition from several major fan organizations. Official fan forums, the Manchester United Supporters' Trust, the 1958 group, and the Red Army organization have all expressed clear opposition to the club's policy. While the club explained that its purpose is to curb illegal ticket resale, external criticism suggests the measures are overly harsh, raising concerns that many innocent season ticket holders may lose their match access.

In a joint statement, these fan groups stated: "The use of technological means to snatch tickets, professional ticket scalping, and profiteering from fans should have no place at Manchester United and must be firmly combated. However, the enforcement of relevant rules must ensure fairness, reasonableness, and transparency. Loyal supporters who have accompanied the club for decades, even across generations of family support, should not be presumed guilty without solid evidence, due process, or channels for appeal. The current 'punish first, investigate later' model is causing unease among the supporter base; investigations should be completed before any disciplinary decisions."

The statement continued: "The ultimate goal of the club and the fans is the same—to ensure that tickets reach genuine supporters fairly and to maintain the health of the ticketing system. Achieving this goal requires building on trust, transparency, prudent enforcement, better system design, and substantive dialogue with the fan community, rather than creating a tense atmosphere where long-term supporters fear losing their decades-long connection with the club."

The Manchester United Supporters' Trust revealed last weekend that the club had sent "notifications of account suspensions and season ticket cancellations to thousands of fans" and stated they had "received a flood of inquiries for help." When contacted by the media regarding the incident, the club declined to comment on the fan groups' statement or the related controversy.

The joint statement from the fan groups also made demands: "The fan forum has formally called on the club to suspend further account suspension notifications and halt any season ticket cancellations during the period of substantive consultations."

Sources indicated that the club's process is as follows: when abnormal activity patterns consistent with scalping are detected in a fan's account, the club first contacts the fan to request relevant information. Penalties are considered only after the contacted party responds or fails to reply within 14 days. The initial communication email does not include any punitive measures. Any ultimately canceled season tickets will be reallocated to fans on the waiting list or existing cup season ticket holders.
