Welsh FA Defects! Infantino's Reelection Bid Dealt Another Heavy Blow

The Football Association of Wales has officially announced it will no longer support FIFA President Gianni Infantino's bid for reelection, after his plan to sell World Cup shares to private investors collapsed.

Last week, Infantino confirmed he was shelving the controversial proposal, which had been explicitly opposed by three continental confederations. Although the plan has been postponed, the crisis of trust accumulated during his more than a decade at the helm of FIFA continues to escalate. On Friday, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham publicly stated that Infantino is not the right person to lead FIFA. Meanwhile, the Football Association also called for a "thorough and robust review" of his leadership.

Infantino had originally planned to formally contest another term in March next year, but the Welsh FA has now become the first member association to publicly withdraw its support. In a statement, the Welsh FA stressed: "The Football Association of Wales hereby confirms the withdrawal of its support for Mr. Gianni Infantino's candidacy for the FIFA presidency for 2027-2031."

The statement further noted: "Serious failings in governance, process, leadership, values, stakeholder communication, decision-making transparency and other areas in recent times have convinced the Welsh FA that Mr. Infantino is no longer fit to continue holding the highest office in world football. His failure to put the fundamental interests of the game first is something we cannot accept." Public opinion widely believes that the leadership trust crisis Infantino currently faces has entered unprecedented territory.
