Still Dreaming Past 40! Dzeko Renews with Schalke, Veteran Targets New Bundesliga Chapter
The Bundesliga is about to see the return of a legendary veteran. Edin Dzeko, the 40-year-old Bosnian striker, has officially reached a contract extension agreement with Schalke 04, with the two sides signing a new one-year deal. This means that in the next Bundesliga season, we will still see this experienced forward donning the Schalke shirt and charging into battle.
Looking back at his performances since joining Schalke in January, Dzeko quickly became a key piece in the team's return to the top flight. In 11 appearances for his new club, he efficiently netted 6 goals and contributed 3 assists, strongly helping the former traditional Bundesliga powerhouse return to the top division after years away — their first promotion since being relegated in the 2022-23 season. As the spiritual leader of the Bosnia-Herzegovina national team, Dzeko also set a special record at the 2026 World Cup: he was one of only eight players over the age of 40 in the tournament, joining evergreen figures such as Luka Modric, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Manuel Neuer in the history books.
“From the moment I joined Schalke in the winter, I became part of this fantastic squad, and the support from the fans has been touching. Being able to win promotion to the Bundesliga with the team is definitely one of the brightest moments of my career — it feels incredible.” Dzeko shared his joy via the club’s official platforms. “Football gives me endless joy and motivation to keep moving forward. My desire to win is still burning hot, and I hope to help the team go further on the new Bundesliga journey.”
Throughout the legendary striker's career, he has left his footprints at many of Europe's top clubs, from Manchester City, Inter Milan to Roma, Wolfsburg, and then Fenerbahce and Fiorentina, leaving a deep mark in every chapter. This contract renewal with Schalke also means Dzeko will celebrate his 41st birthday at the Ruhr-region club.
Schalke's management spoke highly of the veteran: “During his four and a half months at Schalke 04, Edin has shown unique value. He is the key man and a fan favorite, and his professional attitude and charisma make him a role model in both the dressing room and on the training ground. Through in-depth exchanges in recent weeks, we clearly feel that Edin's desire to win is just as strong as ever. So we firmly believe that even on the Bundesliga stage, he can still play an important role. Edin staying is undoubtedly the most exciting news for the club.”
